The therapeutic benefits of cannabinoids are no secret, but what may be lesser known is that there are other elements of cannabis that provide therapeutic relief: terpenes. Terpenes are most known for producing unique and distinguishable flavors and scents, but they also have have positive implications on one's health. Terpenes can be found in the trichome resin glands on the buds and leaves of cannabis plants, and some researchers believe cannabis roots may also secrete terpenes. The cannabis plant produces 400 unique compounds, of which an estimated 100 are terpenes. They provide medicinal value alone and in tandem with other active cannabis compounds like cannabinoids. Alone, terpenes may provide anti-tumor effects, sedative effects, reduce inflammation, and quell convulsions. When working with cannabinoids in what is known as the "entourage effect," terpenes contribute to the therapeutic relief that only whole plant cannabis can provide.
