Muscular Dystrophy is characterized as a genetic disorder that leads to the progressive degeneration of skeletal muscles, damaging muscle fibers and resulting in muscle weakness. Symptoms of muscular dystrophy include the inability to walk, contractions, breathing problems, scoliosis, heart problems, and issues swallowing. Studies show marijuana may be effective at controlling the pain and involuntary muscle contractions that come with the disorder.

By activating the CB1 and CB2 receptors, THC and CBD are able to effectively regulate the release of neurotransmitter and central nervous system immune cells in order to lower pain levels. Additionally, medical professionals most commonly recommend and prescribe medical cannabis to treat muscle spasms and pain. Cannabis reduces muscle tremors and spasticity also by activating receptors within the endocannabinoid system. Both human and animal trials show cannabis improves muscle spasticity.
