Dystonia and Medical Marijuana

Dystonia is a neurological movement disorder characterized by involuntary muscle contractions that painfully force your body to twist into abnormal postures. There are various causes for the disease, but the outcome often has the same effect; it prevents people from living normal and comfortable lives because of the chronic pain, depression, and limited social interactions that accompany the condition. Research has indicated that medical cannabis can treat dystonia, with case studies showing significant clinical improvement and sometimes complete reduction in pain. Both THC and CBD have proven beneficial. Unfortunately, the studies up to date have only treated extremely small populations, focusing on single or small groups of dystonia patients. Plenty of anecdotal evidence supports the use of cannabis in treating dystonia symptoms, but hopefully there will be more extensive academic research to back up these claims in the future.
