Cannabis' ability to act as an analgesic and anti-inflammatory makes it a powerful candidate for the treatment of asthma. This is because asthma involves the sudden inflammation of the bronchial tubes in what is known as an asthma attack. Symptoms of the illness include coughing, shortness of breath, wheezing, and chest tightness and pain. Because asthma is considered a common illness, effecting an estimated 20% of the population in developed nations, constantly developing new and effective treatment options is necessary.

Whaxy mentions stress and anxiety as a common trigger for asthma attacks, so cannabis is not only an effective treatment option due to its anti-inflammatory properties, but also due to its ability to reduce stress and anxiety. Whaxy continues, "Prevention is the best medicine, and anything that can deliver the overall health benefits of reduced stress while also both preventing attacks and decreasing the severity of asthma symptoms is a powerful tool in the medicine cabinet of any sufferer." There are many effective pharmaceutical drugs currently available to asthma sufferers, but Whaxy says some of these medications only work to prevent asthma attacks and do not offer relief for asthma symptoms during an attack.

Thanks to Dr. Donald Tashkin, a lung expert and professor of medicine at UCLA, it was discovered that smoked cannabis acts as a bronchodilator that widens lung airways. That being said, he conceded that smoking cannabis is not a preferable method for ingestion. Now, the availability of vaporization offers patients a cannabinoid delivery method that does not exacerbate respiratory issues but still provides quick and effective symptom relief.
